Shamrocks, clover, oxalis, whatever you call them, they have been a St. Patrick’s Day staple for hundreds of years. Their 3 leafed foliage is said to bring good luck and their various bloom colors are a sign of spring. Our 6″ oxalis come in a green, purple and variegated variety called “Iron Cross.” Each produces different colored flowers including light purple, white and pink. They love the shade and prefer moderate temperatures, making them a lovely indoor plant. If you keep them inside, be sure there is bright light, if its too low light they will get leggy. These particular oxalis have corms. Corms are similar to bulbs in the way that they store energy and water for the plant. Up north, these corms come in handy when the plants go dormant, this way they still have the resources they need to survive through the winters. Corms also make it very easy to propagate. Because of our warm temperatures and no dormancy period, oxalis can take over an area if planted in the ground. We recommend to keep them contained in a pot.  Be sure to water when the soil is dry to touch and fertilize with the flourish organic liquid fertilizer.

Fun Fact!

There are over 570 different species of oxalis. It has been a question for hundreds of years, which shamrock was used in Ireland for the early St. Patrick's Day tradition? Historians and horticulturalists all over the world have not yet found the definite answer for which shamrock is the traditional variety. For now, we just pick out the ones that we like best.
