Oleander is an evergreen plant that thrives in 5+ hours of sun. This variety, petite pink, has light pink blooms with a slightly smaller flower than the regular Oleander. All varieties of Oleander grow well in SWFL. They handle heat and humidity very well and can even take salt spray, so they’re a great option for a beachside home. Oleander blooms all spring and summer and loves the warmer months. Blooming time may also continue into the fall, so you can see blooms most of the year. Oleanders have a small, elongated leaf with a dark green color. Rabbits and deer tend to leave Oleander alone. Of course, being called “Petite Pink” this variety is dwarf and can get about 4 feet tall. This makes a perfect shrub in the landscape or potted plant. Oleander can handle a variety of soil, but to enjoy them at their prime, be sure to fertilize regularly. You want to fertilize your oleander with the Suro-Gro 6-8-10 bloom boosting fertilizer. If you plant yours in the ground this time of year, you should water every day to ensure your plant will be established. Since it is the hot and dry season, you need to water more.
Disclaimer: Oleander is poisonous to humans.
Fun Fact!
Being part of the Apocynaceae family, you may notice some similarities between oleander and plants like Mandevillea. Both of these plants produce flowers with a funnel and produce sap when they are cut back.
