Yellow Bells, Yellow Elder or Tecoma Stans produce bell shaped flowers that come in both yellow and orange. They like zones 10b to 11 so they do very well in our area. They do best in full sun and can be maintained as a bush or a small tree. Although they are draught tolerant, when you first plant them in the ground, they will need more water until established. Keeping up with pruning will help the plant keep a nice shape they grow at a moderate rate and push lots of new growth during the growing season, so a good renewal pruning during that time is a good idea. The Sure-Gro 6-8-10 is the best fertilizer for them and it should be applied about 3 times a year, October, March and May. This will keep their leaves a dark green and promote blooms. Their orange and yellow blooms are a great eye-catching flower to have in your yard for the fall. Tecoma Stans will bloom on and off throughout the year, typically in spring and fall is when you will see the most blooms. Their blooms will also attract pollinators like bees and butterflies along with the occasional hummingbird.

Yellow Elder is actually native to the southwest parts of the United States and parts of South America. They are also fund in the West Indies and do very well in our sub-tropical climates. Their vibrant blooms are symbolic of happiness, prosperity and positivity. They are seen in many cultural events because of what they symbolize and their sweet fragrance.
