Texas Sage
Leucophyllum frutescens
not valid on prior purchases • cash & carry
This particular variety of Texas Sage, Desperado, is a shrub with silvery leaves and produces purple and lavender colored flowers. These shrubs make a great addition to the landscape with their leaf color and cute blooms. Texas Sage can grow to be 5 ft tall but are typically maintained smaller at a 3-4 ft height. Keeping them trimmed regularly will ensure the plant is full and short, which is most commonly how we see them in the landscape. They like a well-drained soil and don’t like having wet feet, so make sure they’re in a place where there’s no sitting water. The blooms will come out during the higher humidity and rainy seasons, our summer to fall season. Although they can take some shade, too much shade could result in a leggy plant, you can prevent this by keeping them in a sunnier spot or regular pruning to promote new growth from those lower branches.
Fun Fact!
Despite the name, Texas Sage is not actually a sage at all. They're in the Scrophulariaceae or more commonly known as the "Figwart Family." This family includes 220 genera and 3000 different species, most being in more temperate areas. However, this plant can grow in zones 8-10 and is commonly found growing wild in the southern-most parts of Texas.
