Vriesea are one of many different species of bromeliads. Within the Vriesea genus there are hundreds of different species and cultivars. They’re native to Central America and do very well in our SWFL climate. Vriesea are known for their showy and long lasting blooms that do very well in shade or even indoors! Unlike other bromeliads, Vriesea don’t have spikes and thorns. As a bromeliad blooms, you may begin to see smaller ones emerge from the bottom. These are called pups and they are the offspring of the mother plant. After the mother plant goes out of bloom, all of her energy goes into her pups. Eventually, the mother plant will die off and you will be left with a few babies that you can repot or mount. These pups will produce the same flower and have the same life cycle as before. Keep your bromeliads in a well draining soil mix and water when soil is dry to touch. Fertilizing with the Better-Gro granular bromeliad fertilizer will keep your plant vibrant and healthy. You can keep your Vriesea in a pot, plant them in the ground, or attach them to a tree, as long as they’re in a shady spot.
Did you know?
Bromeliads are epiphytic! Just like many orchid varieties, bromeliads can be mounted in a tree or on a plaque. Their roots can bare and exposed on the tree and will eventually adhere to the tree as they grow. They will continue their normal life cycle on a tree too. You will see pups emerge from the bottom and grow all around the mounted area.
