Citronella
Pelargonium 'citrosum'
not valid on prior purchases • cash & carry
Citronella is actually a type of Geranium. They produce a citrus-like scent that is used in outdoor candles to deter bugs, like mosquitos. Most bugs don’t like the smell of citrus’, mints, rosemary and lavenders. They have dark green colored leaves and very unique foliage making them an attractive plant in a pot for an outdoor area where there could be bugs. They do like the sun and can be in partial to full sun exposure. You can fertilize using an organic Espoma Plant-Tone fertilizer. This applied regularly will keep the foliage that nice dark green color. A regular pruning on your citronella will keep the shape of the plant a nice tight ball and help it from getting leggy at the bottom. If not pruned, they can reach 4ft in height and are also very easy to propagate.
Fun Fact!
Citronella is known for its mosquito repelling scent. But, did you know that you can rub the leaves on your skin? When crushing the leaves, the natural scent will be enhanced and stronger. Applying the oils from the leaves on your skin instantly repels bugs and lasts a while too. Be sure to test this on a small portion of skin before putting it all over your body to ensure you don't have any allergies or sensitivity to the plant.
