Ponytail palms are great house plants or landscape plants. Despite the name, these plants are not palms; they are actually part of the asparagaceae family. They are very slow growing plants- it can take up to 30 years of growing to mature and to bloom. Using an all-purpose fertilizer, like Osomocote, works well when keeping them indoors. They do well in part sun and shade and make a good focal point in the landscape. Their caudex can get up to 8ft wide and 25-30ft tall. Although this takes many, many years. Once mature, certain varieties leaves can get 5ft long and they will also produce more branches from the caudex, giving them a very unique look. Originally, they are from eastern Mexico, so they do very well in our tropical climate.
Fun Fact!
Ponytail palms can also bloom. Being such slow growers, it can take a few decades before they are mature enough to actually bloom. The caudex, which is the bulb at the base of the trunk, must be mature to give the plant enough energy to produce a flower. If your plant is indoors, it is much less likely to be able to bloom. Their flowers are tall, feathery looking, blooms that are either pink or yellow. Females will even fruit after the bloom.
