Russelia equisetiformis is native to Mexico and, as its botanical name implies, resembles Horsetail Reed – Equisetum. Russelia’s rush-like stems develop pendulous sprawling branches that cascade and become profusely covered with bright red tubular flowers resembling tiny firecrackers that will attract nectar lovers like butterflies and hummingbirds. Fertilize with Nurseryman’s Sure Gro 6-8-10 and plant in fertile well drained soil at a location that will get at least 6 hours of sun for optimal flowering. They do not like wet locations and prefer to dry a bit between watering. They will bloom on and off throughout the year and a light prune can be done as needed but usually in late winter or early spring as they bloom on new growth. Firecracker plants can sprawl out over the landscape and form beautiful fountain-like masses that are stunning as a spillover for walls, hanging baskets, patio planters, or ground covers.

Fun Fact!

Firecracker plants profusely bloom with tubular red flowers that are loaded with nectar and are a magnet for hummingbirds. Other pollinators and nectar lovers are bees and butterflies. It has shown recent potential for attracting Junonia coenia, the Common Buckeye, which uses it as a host plant.
